Phoenix Aiono, the younger brother of Kingston, was born September 14, 2007. Phoenix was diagnosed with XLP as well. Diagnosed in utero gave the family some time to prepare for what some will call a miracle. He would need a Bone Marrow Transplant, or suffer the same fate as his big brother Kingston. He needed a match and fast.

The combined efforts of Phoenix’ friends and family brought over 1000 new people, most of which were Pacific Island/Polynesian descent, to the National Marrow Donor Program.

One of these drives held in the name of Phoenix, was successful in finding a donor match for another Polynesian child in another part of the world.

While Phoenix’ family did all they could to register potential donors through drives, his medical team at UCLA searched the cord banks as well. Finally a match was found in Australia.
